Breathedge 2 Cold & Oxygen Drain: Chill, Frostbite and Hypothermia
Updated · Breathedge 2 Wiki
Cold can drain oxygen much faster even when your tank has not changed. Chill multiplies oxygen drain by 1.01, Frostbite by 1.5 and Hypothermia by 5. The last two stages also slow flight by 10%; Hypothermia adds periodic damage. Find warmth before spending the rest of your oxygen on a slower return trip.
Individual cold-stage effects: Steam Build 25584330, October 4, 2026. These multipliers describe cold’s contribution. Difficulty, equipment, location and other effects also influence the character’s actual drain and damage.
In this guide
Read the cold stage before judging the oxygen tank
| Stage | Oxygen drain | Hunger drain | Flight speed | Base periodic damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chill | ×1.01 | +30% | No penalty from this stage | No periodic damage from this stage |
| Frostbite | ×1.5 | +80% | −10% | No periodic damage from this stage |
| Hypothermia | ×5 | +200% | −10% | 1 health every 2 seconds |
Chill’s oxygen effect is small: ×1.01 means 1% more oxygen drain from that stage. Frostbite is a much larger step at 50% more. Hypothermia reaches five times the base oxygen drain affected by cold, making a familiar route far more demanding.
Read one row for the active stage. Frostbite does not add its row to Chill, and Hypothermia does not add together all three oxygen multipliers.
Faster drain and slower flight make the return trip harder
Frostbite and Hypothermia reduce flight speed by 10%. This combines a practical travel problem with the oxygen penalty: a trip that was comfortable while warm may require more oxygen when you return cold.
Stop extending the route when the warning escalates. Head for a known warm place or safe recovery point while you still have enough oxygen to reach it. A larger oxygen reserve buys flexibility, but it does not remove the cold condition.
If flight is completely disabled, check carried weight as well. Critical overload disables flight; the cold stages in this table reduce flight speed. Use the active warning to choose between warming up and unloading.
Warm up, and treat Alcohol as an emergency tradeoff
The early cold warning directs you toward warmth or Alcohol. Returning to warmth addresses the reason the condition is worsening; use the cold icon and stage to confirm recovery before starting another trip.
Alcohol has costs alongside its warming use: its base effects restore 5 thirst but remove 5 satiety and 10 stamina, and it causes Intoxication. That makes it a poor replacement for food, water and planned shelter on a long outing.
At Hypothermia, the warning calls for warmth and medicine. A Medkit restores 30 base health, but healing does not by itself remove the cold condition. Deal with exposure so the same periodic damage does not continue.
Cold also changes your food budget
| Stage | Hunger increase | Equivalent hunger drain factor |
|---|---|---|
| Chill | +30% | 1.3 times |
| Frostbite | +80% | 1.8 times |
| Hypothermia | +200% | 3 times |
A +200% hunger penalty means three times the affected base drain, while the same cold stage uses a five-times oxygen multiplier. The two meters do not share one universal cold multiplier.
Pack food as well as oxygen for a cold outing. If the hunger warning appears, it introduces its own fatigue effects; at Starvation it can also slow movement and cause damage. Eating fixes the food shortage, while warmth addresses the cold penalty that made the food run out faster.
Improve protection before making the route longer
The 0.8.11 update fixes the Easy-difficulty quest to accept 100 Cold Protection. That is a progression threshold, not an absolute guarantee about every cold hazard. Use the displayed character resistance and the conditions on your HUD together.
- Open the suit planner and include the protection panels you actually have equipped.
- Count permanent Cold Protection rewards, including the +10 from Weird toilet, separately from the protection on each suit slot.
- Keep enough food, water and health recovery for the planned trip; reduce excess cargo so overload does not make the return more difficult.
- Read the active cold stage during the trip. Reaching a quest’s protection target does not promise immunity in every area.
Why a fixed “seconds left” estimate can mislead
The table gives relative effects, so it is useful for comparing stages. It does not turn a tank’s capacity into a universal survival timer: oxygen use depends on the character and environment as well as the active cold stage.
Use your current oxygen display and a safe return point when deciding whether to continue. If oxygen consumption changes suddenly, inspect the cold stage and the other conditions before assuming your tank or equipment has failed.
